Some Basic Solar Terms and Solar Panel Definitions

  • Feed-in Tariff
This refers to the obligation of electricity distributors to purchase renewable electricity outputs from an individual or company with a renewable energy system in place, at a rate set by the government or authorities.
  • Hybrid systems
Hybrid solar systems are systems that make use of more than one solar system type, such as an on grid solar system using batteries or an off grid solar system with power backup.
  • Monocrystalline panels
Monocrystalline solar panels are designed from a single crystal structure thereby preserving the purity and performance efficiency of the silicon crystal.
  • Polycrystalline panels
Polycrystalline solar panels do not follow a strict single crystal pattern, thereby exhibiting less efficiency than their monocrystalline counterparts. These panels, however, are easy to produce and are more affordable than the monocrystalline solar panels.
  • NEM
Net-Energy-Metering is a concept whereby priority is given to the consumption of energy from solar photovoltaic systems and any surplus energy is to be sold to electricity distributors at a specific cost.Starting January 1, 2019 in Malaysia, however, the NEM will operate through an offset basis, where each exported solar energy kilowatt to the utility grid will be offset against a kilowatt of electricity consumed through the grid.
  • On grid solar system
An on grid solar system refers to a solar power system that is attached to the main utility grid.
  • Off grid solar system
Also known as a stand-alone power system, an off grid solar system operates without any reliance or attachment to the public utility grid. Mostly, an off grid system relies on solar battery storage.
  • Solar battery
A solar battery is used to store energy from a solar photovoltaic system.
  • Solar charge controller
This refers to a voltage regulator that prevents overcharging in batteries.
  • Solar inverter
A solar inverter converts the direct current (DC) production from solar panels into alternating current (AC) suitable for residential or commercial electricity use.
  • Solar PV
Solar photovoltaics refer to the process of converting sunlight into electricity through materials such as solar panels.
